The Feldenkrais method is a gentle system of movement education renowned for its ability to free the body from stiffness, pain, postural and movement problems.

It can help with:

  • Long term back or neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Frozen shoulders
  • Stiffness and tension
  • Recovery from strokes
  • Post traumatic stress
  • Arthritis
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Repetitive strain injury
  • Poor balance or walking difficulties
  • Improving performance for riders, sportspeople, dancers and musicians

Treatments consist of an assessment of your movement patterns and postural habits which are contributing to your pain, and your body is gently released and repatterned, using soft stretches and deeply relaxing kneading, pushing, pulling and pressing strokes.

No specific number of treatments is required and the emphasis is helping you to gain control of your body, and to have the tools to help yourself.
Awareness is the key.

Barbara McCrea
Barbara McCrea completed the four year Feldenkrais Method® professional training in London in 1990, where she ran a successful practice for 13 years. She has attended advanced trainings run by US, Israeli and British practitioners of the method. She is also a member of the UK Feldenkrais Guild and teaches movement classes for opera singers at the University of Cape Town.

The Feldenkrais Method® of movement education was developed by Israeli physicist and judo master Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) initially in response to his own knee injury.

Who uses it?
Among the fans are actresses Whoopi Goldberg and Greta Scacchi, the late violin virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin, New Age writer Lesley Kenton and US Track National Champion Chris Boyd.

How it works
Our brains control our movement and the tightness or freedom of our muscles. Using the powerful connection between our minds and bodies, the Feldenkrais Method® optimises the way you move.

Workshops and sessions in London

From Nov 15 2015 - Feb 15 2016, Barbara will be giving sessions from 14 Neals Yard, Covent Garden and teaching some workshops from her former practice at the Open Centre, Old Street, in the City.

1:1 Feldenkrais sessions

Feldenkrais 1:1 involves gentle touch, and is non-invasive, sophisticated and highly effective in helping people find relief from a wide-range of complaints, relating to the way they move. Pain and stress relief, ease of movement and a sense of well-being and relaxation are the natural outcomes.

Workshop For Qualified Feldenkrais Practitioners

Feldenkrais Workshop

Date: Sat 21 Nov & Sun 22 Nov 2015
Time: Sat 10.30am-4pm & Sun 11am-3pm
Price: £80
Venue: Open Centre, Old Street, London EC1

This workshop draws on Barbara’s 25 years of teaching experience, focusing on practical applications of the Method. She has presented 27 CPD courses to physiotherapists and other health professionals in South Africa, workshops for equestrians (her sport), workshops for Pilates teachers (she works out of a Pilates Studio), workshops for opera singers (she teaches “the Singing Body” at two universities) rugby players and people with neurological difficulties. The workshop will offer ways to conceptualise and structure workshops, how to devise manuals when they are required, and how to communicate effectively with medical people or linear-thinking exercise teachers, how to choose what to present at a conference or talk, and how to avoid Feldenkrais jargon. The workshop will offer some ATM, but the focus will be on working in small groups and becoming more effective out in the world, without losing authenticity. Participants can bring special interests and areas where they would like to apply Feldenkrais, and brainstorm how best to do it – from Feldenkrais for furniture removers, drivers, violinists, cricketers, computer users, telephonists, children with learning difficulties etc.

Stress erodes all our body systems, and we may perpetually respond to life as if we were physically in danger and always alert, and wonder why we seem to be tired, stiff, sore, breathe shallowly, sleep badly and feel anxious. The dangerous tigers of our times are emotional and social stresses, harder to see and run away from. Feldenkrais helps restore the balance of the nervous system and releases the physical structures of the autonomic nervous system in the upper body and trunk which get caught up through poor posture, poor breathing and persistent stress. The ATMS will include work related to breathing, the jaw, neck and upper body. Unwind, restore and re-set!

Awareness though Movement® classes
For anyone considering a regular class, it is a wonderful way to increase your body-intelligence and awareness on a weekly basis, and the benefits to your body are the usual Feldenkrais magic – feeling more relaxed, alive, taller, supple and agile.

Replace force with "feel". Improve posture, flexibility, balance and alignment Useful to eliminate rounded shoulders, tight shoulders and hands, aching backs and necks, hip, leg and knee problems. When your body is more supple, you can ride in a way which will encourage relaxation and suppleness in the horse.

What are the exercises like?
Feldenkrais exercises are done dismounted - lying down or sitting - they proceed slowly and gently as you listen to verbal instructions, often with your eyes closed. The exercises interrupt ingrained patterns of movement that may be unwittingly leading to asymmetrical movement or pain. Each workshop will feature different exercises, and will also be inspired by particular issues which the equestrians on the course bring. Many people believe that a supposed weakness or bad habit must be overcome through some rigorous, forceful routine. One of the most rewarding benefits of Feldenkrais is the realization that improvements in ease of movement can be learned pleasurably and faster than you think.
